Beatson Institute Biological Services Unit

A fantastic testimonial from Alistair Wilson, Facilities Manager at Beatson Institute for Cancer Research. Bouygues Energies & Services provided a solution to help improve the internal air quality, humidity, temperature control and air changes within two of their cleanrooms.

In 2018 The Beatson Institute for Cancer Research engaged with Bouygues Engineering Services to provide a proposal for the replacement of two dilapidated air-handling units serving our Biological Services Unit on the University of Glasgow’s Garscube campus.

Before the proposal was submitted Bouygues Energies & Services spent time on-site with key staff to understand the operation of the facility and to identify critical elements and any special requirements to meet the needs of the organisation, for this project but also with a view to the future development of the site.

There were a number of Home Office criteria which had to be met such as temperature, humidity and filtration. This included a 14-day holding test where Bouygues Energies & Services had to demonstrate the environmental conditions could be maintained within set parameters for a period of two weeks, before the Home Office would sign off on the project.

Access to the site was particularly awkward, Beatson Institute Cleanrromhowever, Bouygues Energies & Services identified the most effective way of getting the new air-handling equipment to its final location. This required craneage and modification to some existing ductwork which will prove to be beneficial for future works in the facility.

The time spent working with key staff proved to be invaluable in determining the specification of the new equipment to be installed but more importantly, they identified that noise and vibration would have an adverse impact upon the breeding cycles of our mouse population.

The project was very successful, delivered on time, within budget and very importantly with no adverse impact upon our operations. The Project manager and installation team had a very good level of experience and were well versed in safe working practices.

The project was completed to cGMP standard in a 6-week programme. CLICK HERE to find out more on the project.
